Medical interpreting in the school setting
Objective:
A panel of providers, interpreters and academics will discuss the challenges that arise when working with children who have medical issues and receive services in the school setting. The panel will reflect on personal encounters and offer perspectives for best practices. Presented with the support of the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE), Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) and the University of Minnesota.
Participants will:
• Discuss differences of interpreting in Medical and Educational settings
• Engage a social worker, psychologist, Autism Specialist & Pacer Advocate
• Discuss the challenges of interpreting for Special Education
Special Education concepts and terminology can be challenging for interpreters to understand. A panel of interpreters, specialists and academics will explore the differences of interpreting in medical and educational settings, discuss the challenges and decision-making process interpreters go through while interpreting in Special Education, and offer tips for working with children. The goal is to improve outcomes between interpreters and providers. This event is presented with support from Elizabeth Watkins and the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE), Aida Azzazi Special Education District Interpreter for Minneapolis Public Schools, MPS Specialists, PACER Parent Advocate and the director of the Program in Translation and Interpreting at the University of Minnesota.
