A Second Time Presentation by UMTIA

Medical or legal, spoken language or sign language; whatever the discipline, interpreters act as both witness and narrator of many aspects of trauma,  which over time can impact mental health and emotional well-being.

This workshop will focus on the concept of secondary traumatic stress, as well as what can prevent and what can put someone at greater risk for experiencing symptoms. We will discuss what to do when you experience symptoms; how to  debrief in confidential ways with friends, family and co-workers; and what to do when witnessing unethical behavior by other professionals.

Interpreters will have approximately 40 minutes at the end of this workshop to discuss and experience peer support. (optional)

Presenter:  Chris Mehus, PHD LAMFT

Chris Mehus is a post-doctoral fellow in Pediatrics at the University of Minnesota and is a Couple and Family Therapist. He has a private practice primarily working with couples and people dealing with the effects of traumatic stress. Broadly, his research involves prevention of the inter-generational impact of traumatic stress. His current research focuses on parenting and he has worked with parents in Minnesota and northern Uganda.
